SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

The recent trend of inviting everyone you know and their brother to stand up with you at your wedding may be fading. More couples are scaling back on the size of their wedding parties – or skipping bridesmaids and groomsmen entirely. Why? To save money, of course, and to reduce stress, and ditch traditions that no longer feel authentic. The average US wedding party now includes 8 people, down from 10 in 2019, according to The Knot. For Gen Z, it’s about choosing meaningful connections over matching outfits and rigid roles. Many guests welcome the change, saying traditional wedding duties can be exhausting and expensive. The honor of being in one wedding can cost a bridesmaid over $2,000. One summed up the situation when she explained in The Atlantic that a commitment that once took a couple days ended up turning into, for her, “an 18-month affair featuring 4-day retreats in destination accommodations, $800 gowns, an unpaid part-time job monitoring group chats and Venmo requests, and multiple showers.” Couples are still celebrating with close friends – but with less pressure, and fewer people.

If KPop Demon Hunters didn’t already cement itself as a cultural phenom, Netflix‘s latest “What We Watched” report seals the deal, proclaiming the it the streamer’s most-watched title ever over a 6-month period. In the second half of last year, KPop Demon Hunters amassed 482 million views. The streamer also reports that the KPop Demon Hunters Lyric Videos raked in an additional 32M views, further illustrating the unprecedented popularity of the film, which just took home multiple Golden Globes, and is considered to be a strong Oscar contender.

Mickey Rourke has some strong words for a person who worked for him, following his recent eviction drama. He alleges a female employee set up a fundraiser in his name for her own gain. Rourke told TMZ: “It was all a scam…(it) was something that somebody who worked for me did to try and keep money for herself.” He continued, saying that he’d “never ask strangers or fans for (gosh darn) charity.” After he emphatically rejected the $100K raised, GoFundMe indicated that donation refunds had been issued.

DID YA KNOW!?

DID YOU KNOW… There is a language that uses whistles instead of words. Silbo Gomero, used on the Canary Island of La Gomera, allows people to communicate across deep valleys. The whistles can carry messages over several miles.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

A new report from BabyCenter reveals which baby names are quickly falling out of favor – and which may be nearing extinction. The parenting site analyzed a full year of data, focusing on the names in the top 1,000 that saw the steepest drops between 2024 and 2025. One clear shift: parents are moving away from “creative” spellings. Names like Charleigh, Alivia, Maddison, Emmitt and Mohamad are losing popularity. Place-inspired names are also fading, with London, Dallas and Malaysia down for girls and Boston slipping for boys. BabyCenter also found declines in boy names ending in “y,” such as Huxley, Grady, Rey, Corey and Harry. Names starting with D and K are dropping too, including Danielle, Dylan, Kenna and Kinley for girls, and Dominic, Dev, Kylian and Karim for boys.

WEIRD NEWS

A British inventor says his souped-up trash can, which broke the Guinness World Record for the fastest wheelie bin, can now hit 66mph (89kph). Michael Wallhead set the official record at 55mph (106kph) in 2023 — and has continued upgrading the motorized bin, nicknamed “The General Waste”. Inspired by a previous record holder, he bought a $25 bin on Facebook Marketplace and spent about $900 modifying it with an engine, 5-speed gearbox, chassis, and specialized wheels to boost its speed.
