SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Who knows? Someday soon, the newest health trend might be…standing on one leg? And why? According to a new report, although balancing on one leg gets harder with age, practicing it can strengthen your body, sharpen your memory…and even support brain health. Our balance typically peaks in our late 30s and declines after 50, making single-leg standing a useful indicator of overall health and how well we’re ageing. Poor balance is linked to muscle loss, slower reaction times and a higher risk of falls. And according to the report, studies even suggest that people who can’t hold the position for 10 seconds in midlife face a greater risk of early death. The good news: regular single-leg exercises can improve strength, coordination and brain function, helping reduce these risks as we grow older. The researchers suggest standing for 10 seconds on one leg, then switching to the other while accomplishing day-to-day activities, like standing at the kitchen sink or while brushing your teeth.

The new “The Exorcist” relaunch starring Scarlett Johansson and “Hamnet” breakout Jacobi Jupe will be released March 12, 2027. The Universal Pictures reboot comes from acclaimed horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan, best known for his numerous Stephen King adaptations and Netflix horror series like “The Haunting of Hill House.” Flanagan’s untitled revamp will be the 7th installment in the “Exorcist” series – the 8th if you count the short-lived “Exorcist” TV series that ran on Fox in the mid-2010s.

Lamar Odom was arrested in Las Vegas for driving under the influence early Saturday morning. Odom has a documented history of drug and alcohol addiction. He was previously arrested for DUI in 2013. In 2015, he nearly died of an overdose, and his wife, Khloé Kardashian, rushed to his side to nurse him back to health. Their relationship ended not long after Odom relapsed in 2016. At last check, he was still in custody.

DID YA KNOW!?

DID YOU KNOW… The longest English word without a vowel is “rhythms.” It contains no traditional vowels—A, E, I, O, or U. The letter “Y” does all the vowel work.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Are we falling out of love with nonfiction? In the early 2020s, readers flocked to books to explain political turbulence. But is the world now too grim to read about – and are podcasters taking the place of authors? In the decade leading up to the pandemic, nonfiction seemed unstoppable. Readers flocked to books that explained a world upended by Brexit, Trump, #MeToo and climate upheaval. Titles such as Timothy Snyder’s On Tyranny, Caroline Criado-Perez’s Invisible Women, and Robin D’Angelo’s White Fragility soared up the charts. It felt as though reading itself was part of the civic response, a way to understand what was happening, and perhaps influence what might happen next. Fast forward to the present day, and the picture is starting to look different: a recent report from NielsenIQ found that trade nonfiction sales have slipped sharply. In volume terms, the category is down 8.4% between last summer and the same period this year – nearly double the decline in paperback fiction – and down 4.7% in value. Though there have been some exceptions, such Chloe Dalton’s Raising Hare and Want by Gillian Anderson, 14 out of 18 nonfiction subcategories have contracted. https://www.theguardian.com/books/2025/dec/17/are-we-falling-out-of-love-with-nonfiction

WEIRD NEWS

This takes the idea of “destination vacation” to a whole new level: A California startup is now accepting reservations for a planned hotel on the moon, with prices ranging from $250,000 to $1 million per guest. GRU Space aims to establish a permanent human outpost on the lunar surface by 2032, with testing and early construction expected to start in 2029. The first habitats will be inflatable, accommodating up to 4 guests for multi-day stays, complete with moonwalks, driving, and even golfing. Future structures will be sturdier, hosting up to 10 visitors, with the ultimate goal of building a grand lunar hotel inspired by San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts. Oh…one more thing: That price of up to $1 million? It doesn’t include the price of getting there. GRU says transportation will “likely exceed $10 million”. LINK: https://www.gru.space/
