THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!
(COMMENTS ARE WELCOME)

Dear John,

My sister was engaged to my friend. They dated for several years first and it all went well. I'm not sure why things fell apart when he finally asked her to marry him. I've known this guy for almost twenty years. He's a good guy. I love my sister too and I wish they could have worked through the problem. Here's my conundrum. He proposed with a ring that has been in his family for generations. Now that they broke up his grandmother asked if he could get the ring back. My sister is not wanting to give the ring back. She said legally it belongs to her now. I don't know about the law... but I think it sucks that she had the ring for about a month and then dumped my friend a few months before the wedding. He's already taking that pretty hard. Now his family is upset with him over the ring. My sister said she wants to sell the ring to pay off some debt. I'm stuck in the middle of this with my friend on one side and my sister on the other side. What do I do? Or should I just stay out of it?

A driver in Spain astounded police when he was found to be under the influence of every drug officers could check for. Police near the town of Carcastillo pulled over a car carrying six people, all piled on top of each other and none wearing seatbelts. The passengers appeared to be drunk, as did their driver. But when officers tested the man, they realized he had been doing more than just drinking. As well as an illegal level of alcohol, high levels of cannabis, amphetamines/methamphetamine, cocaine, and opiates were all found in the man’s system, making it surprising he could drive at all. The driver has been fined a total of €2,000—around $2,280. Half of the fine was for failing the alcohol test and the other was for failing the drugs test. The driver had six points deducted from his driving license for each offense, meaning he now faces a road ban. The man’s car was also impounded.

A woman was taken into custody Monday night after firing a shot into the air in the Government Hill neighborhood of Anchorage, Alaska. Police said the woman, identified as 50-year-old Tamara Phillips Gillespie, had walked outside, “upset over nearby construction noise being made by a paving crew.” She “fired one shot into the air and then went back inside her home.” Police reported that throughout the standoff Gillespie would “step out of the front door, state she would not comply with officers' instructions, and then go back inside. That happened multiple times.” After evacuating several nearby houses, police deployed gas and Gillespie came out onto the front porch. She was taken into custody at 7:52 p.m. after a police K-9 was released. (https://goo.gl/UvkVH9)
