THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John,

Our family has a facebook group where we share “family things” and stay informed on what everyone is up to. Last week my youngest sister posted in the group that she wants to skip Christmas presents for one another this year. She lost her job a few months ago. She and her husband are getting buy, but she didn't want the pressure of getting gifts this year. I asked my older sister if she would like to be a secret Santa with me to buy them some things anyway. My older sister told me that was a bad idea, since she specifically said she didn't want that! Should I still get something with no expectations of a gift in return? I think that's what makes the most sense. What do you think?

Signed – Sad Sister

As motorists drove past them Saturday afternoon, a Florida couple engaged in a series of sex acts on the side of a road, a lewd display that landed them behind bars. According to a felony criminal complaint, “many drivers” observed 39-year-old Amber Gormley and 30-year-old Shawn McClelland as they trysted adjacent to a roadway in Largo, a city in the Tampa Bay area. Gormley and McClelland were spotted, cops say, around 2:45 p.m. in an “open area location of a busy area where all drivers could see then having intercourse.” Gormley and McClelland were charged with lewd and lascivious exhibition, a felony, and booked into the county jail on $10,000 bond. McClelland was also hit with a misdemeanor charge of possession of synthetic marijuana. Gormley’s rap sheet includes convictions for theft, narcotics possession, obstruction, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of burglary tools. (https://bit.ly/3nqZcTO)

Microsoft has issued an unusual safety warning to owners of its new Xbox Series X, requesting that gamers avoid blowing vape smoke into the console. The company issued the warning on Wednesday night, less than 24 hours after the new gaming system was released. “We can't believe we have to say this, but please do not blow vape smoke into your Xbox Series X,” the company tweeted. The tweet comes as videos crop up across social media showing smoke billowing from the new $600 consoles. Users sharing the footage claim the new Xbox has problems with overheating and may even catch fire. However, the videos are reportedly fake. A Twitter user pointed out that if one were to turn off their Xbox Series X and smoke a vape into it, vapor soon rises out of the console, as seen in the videos. (https://bit.ly/32O49OR)

A driver looking to make some quick cash caused quite the spectacle on Interstate 4 through Hillsborough County Monday. Florida Highway Patrol said a driver picked up a downed metal utility pole, strapped it to the roof of his 1997 Toyota Camry, and planned to sell it to a scrapyard. He didn't get too far. Just after 10:00 a.m., FHP got a call from someone who witnessed another driver loading the pole onto his roof on the outside shoulder of I-4 west. The witness followed at a safe distance until a Trooper made a traffic stop. The driver, 71-year-old Douglas Hatley of Lakeland, said he was trying to turn in the pole as scrap metal for cash and that he didn't know it was illegal to remove the pole, even if it was broken or had fallen. Hatley was arrested and taken to the Hillsborough County Jail. He's charged with grand theft. (https://bit.ly/3kHO6IC)

A wanna-be rapper from Brooklyn wasn’t going to lose his shot at blasting a flamethrower from atop a city bus for a guerrilla music video — even though the illicit nighttime stunt put more than two dozen passengers in harm’s way. Streams of fire burst into the air and down the back of the MTA bus in shocking video that emerged on social media. The 57-second clip shows rapper Dupree G.O.D jumping shirtless from the top of an ice cream truck onto a B26 bus at Franklin and Putnam Avenues in Bedford-Stuyvesant. He then fires off his hand-held flamethrower, shooting blazing arcs in the air before running to the back of the bus and shooting the flames downward, torching the ground as the bus starts to move. An NYPD spokeswoman said the department was “aware of the video” and is currently conducting an investigation. (https://bit.ly/35HT8jP)

Everybody’s working for the weekend, but what if the weekend was a little bit longer? A survey (from YouGov) finds that most Americans would prefer a four-day workweek with longer hours, rather than the traditional five-day workweek. The poll of more than 36,000 Americans finds that 67 percent would prefer a four-day workweek with 10-hour days rather than the traditional five-day workweek with 8-hour days.

A survey finds almost 50 percent of people don’t change their underwear every day. The research — by underwear maker Tommy John — revealed that 45 percent have worn the same pair of briefs for two days or longer. Even worse, 13 percent of those surveyed admitted that they’d sported the same undies for seven days or more.

What should you do after a break-up? Another therapist says make a short post-breakup bucket list — things that will not only make you feel better but make you realize you’ve been held back, either by your ex or by yourself.

Fellow humans, this month we celebrate the ten year anniversary of one of the greatest scientific discoveries of all time. It was in November of 2010 the combined brain power of American researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Princeton University discovered… how cats drink. The research revealed cats use their mouths to drink. Yup. In all seriousness, the scientists found out that when drinking, a cat moves its tongue very fast to form a column of liquid. Unlike humans, cats can’t suck liquid. Dogs have the same dilemma, but they have a simpler and less elegant solution — they just scoop up the liquid, using the tip of their tongues as ladles. The cat way of drinking is more awesome because it involves balancing gravity and inertia, and it prevents their chins from getting wet. And no one likes wet chins.

If you were thought dead for 11 hours but then woke up, what would be your first request? A woman in Poland declared dead by her doctor came back to life complaining of the cold — and requested hot tea.

Researchers say a facial scar, like one inflicted in a fight or from a tough job, increases men’s attractiveness to a woman for a short-term relationship. Show pictures of men with and without different scars, women rated the scarred faces as better looking — but scars did not enhance women’s attractiveness to men. Results show that scarring enhances women’s ratings of men’s attractiveness for short-term relationships, but not for long-term relationships.

Deputies responding to an armed robbery Tuesday morning at an Oregon hardware store didn’t have to go far to find the getaway car. Clackamas County sheriff’s officials wrote in a news release that it was the dark-colored Mazda CX-9 with a black sofa strapped on top. Deputies spotted the car near the Ace Hardware in Happy Valley, then gave chase when the driver refused to pull over. They pursued the car, still carrying the sofa, north on Interstate 205 into Vancouver, Oregon. The driver finally stopped the car and dashed away on foot, but was quickly caught. Deputies arrested 34-year-old Joseph Tyler Johnson. They found a pistol near the stopped Mazda CX-9 and discovered the car itself had been reported stolen. Johnson faces charges including robbery, unlawful use of a weapon, attempt to elude, reckless driving and reckless endangering. The vehicle and sofa, labeled “of uncertain provenance” by deputies, were towed from the scene. (https://bit.ly/3p5VK2G)

Police in Hollywood, Florida responded to a call at the Capone’s Flicker Lite Bar & Pizza Restaurant after a man entered the establishment, clearly inebriated, and became violent after staff refused him service. The man has since been identified as 48-year-old Robert Nessler. Nessler demanded more alcohol, and when staff turned him away – as they were trained to do when someone has had “too much” – he refused to back down. Owner Patty Nettina pushed Nessler away from one of her servers, at which point he pushed her back. “I pushed him to get him away from her and he pushed me back and I went tumbling across the bar,” Nettina said. Nessler then reportedly punched the waitress, Holly Dulgerian, several times, according to witnesses. He really wanted that new Xbox, but he got arrested instead. 24-year-old Zoser Muhammad allegedly punched a 36-year-old man in the face at an East Harlem, New York GameStop, where devoted video gamers had lined up to purchase the new Xbox Series X game system, and then was caught with a fake Glock handgun. The mini-drama went down at the Gamestop on 3rd Avenue near East 105th St. about noon on Tuesday. The victim, who was in line ahead of Muhammad and a female friend, went into the store and bought the gaming system. On his way out, Muhammad slammed him in the right cheek, causing pain and bruises. Muhammad, who lives nearby the store, ran off, dropping his backpack. His friend picked it up and cops confiscated it. They found the replica Glock handgun inside. Later, Muhammad showed up at the 23rd Precinct stationhouse to retrieve his backpack. He was arrested there for assault and weapon possession. (https://bit.ly/3knO1cE)

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, video shows a Florida man pointing a bright green laser light directly at a helicopter pilot. Deputies said that footage from the department’s Chase 2 helicopter shows 32-year-old Jason Ogle standing outside a home Friday night and pointing the laser directly into the sky. The neon beam was strong and bright enough for the pilot to pinpoint Ogle’s location and direct deputies on the ground to him. Deputies said Ogle still had the laser in his hand when they approached but quickly moved back toward the door of the home and threw something inside before he was taken into custody. According to the affidavit, Ogle made comments about shining the laser into the sky but refused to answer further comments. Deputies said the pilot was required to seek medical treatment due to the repeated strikes to his eyes. Ogle is facing a charge of pointing a laser light at a driver or pilot.(https://bit.ly/3ltKBXs)
