The police department in Waverley, England, is investigating a rash of baked bean-related crimes. That's right: baked bean-related crimes. "Local officers have received reports of incidents in Wonersh where beans and other food has been poured onto residents' front doors and cars overnight," Surrey Police wrote. "The victims are understandably distressed by this unacceptable behavior." The Facebook post also included an image of four empty cans of beans — presumably discarded by the perpetrator — and a photo of some unfortunate local's bean-drenched driver's side door. The Waverley Police say that officers will continue to patrol the area and will "[keep] an eye out for anything suspicious." They are also encouraging residents to report if their homes or vehicles have recently been "beaned," or if they can provide any tips that would help them identify the bean-dumper. The Facebook commenters haven't shared any intel, but they have made a lot of dad jokes about the carb-heavy vandalism. "I hope someone spills the beans on who it might be," one helpful resident wrote. "Wonder how long it will take the police to ketchup with them," another added. And a third person warned that anyone who'd considered moving to Surrey should know that "the crime rate has bean going up." (https://bit.ly/2VUvgaS)

The Tesla owner who was watching a movie when his car, traveling in autopilot mode, struck a North Carolina police cruiser has walked away from the crash legally unscathed. Prosecutors recently dismissed a pair of charges filed against Devainder Goli following the August 2020 crash near Raleigh. Goli, a 67-year-old doctor, was cited for watching TV while driving and failing to move over. Both counts were dropped by prosecutors. Although there is no explanation for the dismissal, records indicate that Goli’s insurer paid more than $28,000 in property damage claims. According to police, Goli was driving home around midnight when his 2015 Tesla Model S sedan struck a Nash County Sheriff's Office squad car, which then caromed into a North Carolina State Highway Patrol vehicle. Both autos were stopped on the highway due to an earlier accident. Two cops--who were both outside their vehicles--were knocked to the ground in the crash, but not seriously injured. A police investigation determined that Goli was watching a movie on his phone while the Tesla traveled in autopilot mode, guided by a series of cameras and ultrasonic sensors. Researches at the University of Vermont studied 50 million tweets a day, scoring the “happiness” of people’s words to monitor the national mood. One consistency from the study: being outdoors — and specifically parks — make us happier. Researchers looked at anonymous Twitter data for the study and tweets from parks and after park visits were more positive. The powerful effects of nature are strongest in large parks with more trees, but smaller neighborhood parks also provide a significant boost. Their impact on happiness is real, measurable, and lasting. Tweets show that parks increase happiness to a level similar to the bounce at Christmas, which typically is the happiest day of the year.

A Baltimore Sun report on a strange federal lawsuit begins with a crazy opening sentence: "Demetra Sweet didn't know, as she sang at her husband Ivan's Baltimore funeral service in late January, that apparently he already had been buried days earlier and miles away." When 67-year-old Ivan Street died in January of congestive heart failure, wife Demetra Sweet made plans to have him cremated through Wylie Funeral Homes. Then a second woman, also claiming to be his wife, came forward and asked the funeral home to bury Ivan Street instead. The funeral home, according to Demetra Sweet's lawsuit, sort of did both. She alleges that Wylie had Ivan Sweet buried in a local cemetery, then staged a phony memorial service for her with an empty urn. She's seeking $8.5 million in the suit. "We vehemently deny the claims advanced by Ms. Street and assert that the underlying matter was handled with the utmost sensitivity toward the loved ones of the deceased," says Brandon Wylie, president of the funeral home. The Washington Post weighs in and concludes that Demetra Street was indeed Ivan Street's legal wife at the time of his death. However, they were separated and living apart. It couldn't determine the legal relationship of Ivan Street and the unnamed woman. Demetra Street's lawsuit says the second woman presented the funeral home with a marriage license from 1997, but one that wasn't official. She "may have believed she was the wife," says Demetra Sweet's lawyer, "but she failed to produce a marriage certificate with a seal on it." (https://bit.ly/2VWFUxt)

Internal affairs had to be contacted to put the officers under investigation in an attempt to figure out the unfortunate miscommunication.

A Collier Area Transit bus was caught on camera driving the wrong way down a busy road during rush hour traffic. Dashcam video shows the CAT bus driving into oncoming traffic on the wrong side of the road. It happened at the intersection of Immokalee Road and SR 29 in Immokalee as traffic was backed up on the road. “It gets heavy due to the construction down that way and the school’s reactivating,” Edgar Acevel, an Immokalee resident, said to the news outlet. The bus driver is seen crossing through the intersection and into the turning lane of oncoming traffic. Drivers that spoke with NBC2 after watching the video of the CAT driver are questioning what would happen to them if they did the same thing. “We gotta wait, so why can’t he wait,” questioned Enrique Herrera of Immokalee. He said if a cop saw him do the same thing in his SUV, he would get pulled over. Both Acevel and Herrera were surprised by the video and said they hold bus drivers to a much higher standard. CAT authorities said the bus driver is off the roads and suspended pending an investigation by the company that is contracted to hire bus drivers. (https://bit.ly/3g73ezz)

A Florida man pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $12.8 million from the nonprofit where he worked—and spending most of it at an adult website. The 59-year-old was the accounting manager for University Medical Service Association (UMSA), a nonprofit providing staffing and support to the University of South Florida's healthcare enterprise, until suspicious activity was noted in November and he was fired. Puglisi was found to have made at least $12.86 million in non-business charges on UMSA credit cards, with at least $11.5 million of that going to the adult site over a period of two years. Specifically, it was spent on interactions with a woman on the site believed to be Puglisi's stepson's fiancee; the two apparently split $743,968 in profits, 60% to Puglisi and 40% to the woman. Puglisi also spent $43,662 at Disney World and sent $22,486 to another woman on the site so she and her friends could fly to Orlando, and hundreds of thousands more on personal travel, rent, a chartered yacht, wedding costs, and all sorts of other personal expenditures. Puglisi has agreed to pay restitution, and he faces up to 20 years behind bars.(https://bit.ly/3ALJwkN)

A Florida man was arrested on Friday for allegedly making threats against Walt Disney World on Twitter, including that he was going to throw grenades into executives’ homes. 31-year-old Steven Jordan of Seminole was taken into custody by Pinellas County law enforcement after a 186-tweet tirade in a three-hour span on August 8th. At least two of the posts were aimed at Walt Disney World. According to police, the now-deleted tweets said: “@Disney or we will blow up all of your execs houses with C4” and “@Disney I will toss a hand grenade threw their loft window.” Police alleged Jordan also made several threats towards Activision and its executives over the gaming company’s sexual harassment lawsuit. Jordan’s account was suspended by Twitter on August 9th. Detectives working with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement determined Jordan was the owner of the raging account. Jordan allegedly admitted to the threatening tweets in an interview. He was charged with threatening to throw, place or discharge a destructive device. Jordan faced a similar charge in 2019 when he was arrested for falsely reporting a bomb. He was being held in the Pinellas County Jail on a $10,000 bond. An MTA motorman let his girlfriend operate a D train through multiple stations in Brooklyn on Friday — and their next stop could be jail. Cops are looking to question the wannabe-conductor, Dominique Belgrave, 28, after she posted an Instagram Story showing her and her beau — identified by police as Terrell Harris — holding hands over the train’s controls on their romantic jaunt through the 50th Street, 55th Street and 62nd Street stations. “Yes, this is me operating the train right now,” Belgrave says in one of multiple videos posted to her account, which has since been made private. At one point, as the love train choo-choos through underground stations, Belgrave is shown in footage alone at the controls and posing for a selfie with Harris in the cab. Belgrave’s caption reads: “Conducting The D u hurdddd.” Footage of the transit-loving temptress driving the motorman wild went viral among MTA workers over the weekend, and eventually caught the eye of a supervisor — who reported them to the NYPD. Interim Transit President Craig Cipriano said Harris will be disciplined. The 32-year-old, 11th-year MTA employee earned $117,486 in 2020, according to SeeThroughNY. “I want to assure customers that the operator involved has been removed from service and will no longer be allowed to control a train,” said Cipriano.
