A Florida Man is accused of striking his girlfriend with a pumpkin and its innards during a 2:00 a.m. confrontation in the couple’s apartment. According to a criminal complaint, 26-year-old Nathan Garisto was arrested on a domestic battery charge. Garisto, free on $1,000 bond, has been ordered to have no contact with the 29-year-old victim. Police say that when they responded to the couple’s Largo residence, the victim was “covered in pumpkin seeds and pulp.” Garisto, cops noted, was “heavily intoxicated while engaged in a verbal argument with his girlfriend.” After refusing his girlfriend’s requests to leave the home, Garisto allegedly “threw a pumpkin and all insides of the pumpkin at the subject.” Garisto has pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor count. A judge yesterday ordered him to wear an alcohol monitor as part of his bond conditions. (https://bit.ly/34fxQJF)

Life is a breeze once you reach the age of 44. This is according to a study of adults over the age of 55. And the good news is the ‘window of contentment’ continues all the way through our 50s, early to mid-60s and beyond. Reasons for life becoming a “breeze” include some financial security, being fit and healthy and being safe in the knowledge the children are doing well in their chosen careers. Other key elements include having a settled home life, being in stable, happy relationships and being comfortable in their own skin.

FitBits, Apple Watches and even our smartphones can track our steps — and some people compete against friends and family to reach the most steps each day.

Parents of trick-or-treaters who gobble up their goodies Halloween night need not be spooked. The candy binge by millions of returning ghosts and goblins is really a harmless, once-a-year tradition, according to a researcher at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. And besides, she said, forbidding candy can have dire consequences upon children developing healthy eating habits. “Parents are overly concerned about candy consumption. As long as children have an otherwise healthy diet, it’s okay to let them indulge in sweets on Halloween night and other special occasions. If you get into the habit of restricting candy, it can provoke children into craving sugary treats even more.”

Authorities say the victim, a 57-year-old man, was taken to Fishermen’s Hospital and then airlifted to a Miami hospital “with injuries that required staples to his head.” He also suffered injuries to his legs, arms and hands. The victim told a detective that he stored a dead rat or mouse in a freezer to feed a pet snake, which upset Arellano. A Holladay, Utah man has been arrested and is facing charges after animal-control officers found twenty Burmese pythons roaming around his residence. According to a probable cause statement filed by a Unified police officer, the 64-year-old man sold a baby python — which is considered an exotic animal — to an undercover officer. After the sale, Salt Lake County Animal Services verified that the man had no permits for either exotic or dangerous animals since 2017. Officers served a search warrant Friday. In his home, according to the probable cause statement, they found twenty pythons “mostly free-roaming inside.” Ten of the snakes measured longer than ten feet. The statement also said officers found marijuana, $2,000 in cash and a firearm — all on the dining room table, in plain sight. Officers also found two unmarked plastic containers full of pills, which were later identified as opiate derivatives. The man was booked into the Salt Lake County jail and later released under conditions that he check in by phone weekly. (https://bit.ly/30WreOc)

A sword-swinging attacker slashed a man who had relieved himself on an apartment building wall in lower Manhattan. The 20-year-old victim was hanging out with four other friends when he began to urinate on a wall on Elizabeth St. at about 2:45 a.m. on Saturday. A man poked his head out of a window in the building and yelled at him to stop. Not long afterward, the man exited the building with a friend — one wielding a sword, the other brass knuckles. The pair beat and hacked at the victim — causing swelling on his face, slashing a rib and chopping his left forearm so deeply the blade touched the bone and damaged tendons. The victim also cut the fingers on his right hand when he grabbed the blade. Medics took him to Bellevue Hospital. Police arrested one of the two alleged attackers, but recovered no weapons. Maximilian Ong was arraigned Sunday on felony assault and weapon possession charges, and released on $20,000 cash bail. (https://bit.ly/2SPyXcu)

An Alabama man arrested for camping out for days on a shuttered Disney World island has been fined $100 and banned from the Florida theme park for life. 42-year-old Richard McGuire pleaded no contest to a trespassing charge under a plea agreement last week in Orange County, Florida. Orange County Sheriff’s deputies found McGuire on Disney’s abandoned Discovery Island in late April. He said he had planned to camp there for a week. The man, originally from Mobile, Alabama, said he did not hear numerous deputies searching the private island for him on foot, by boat, and by air because he was asleep in a building. He told the deputy he did not know it was a restricted area, despite there being numerous “no trespassing” signs. “Richard stated that he was unaware of that and that it looked like a tropical paradise,” according to the arrest report.(https://bit.ly/2IsbI6w)

They’re on thin ice! Two snowboarders accused of causing an avalanche in Colorado earlier this year could be on the hook for nearly $170,000. 26-year-old Evan Hannibal and 38-year-old Tyler DeWitt are both charged with reckless endangerment for allegedly starting the March 25th snowslide that buried hundreds of feet of roadway. Things began going downhill for the pair after they submitted GoPro footage to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. “Throughout the video there are several comments made about areas of concern,” Brian Metzger, a special operations technician with the Summit County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a report. “The pair were clearly worried about avalanche conditions but proceeded down the path anyway.” Authorities brought charges against the snowboarders after reviewing the footage. Normally, the pair would face up to six months in the county jail and a $750 fine, but prosecutors want them to reimburse the state $168,000 for the damage caused. (https://bit.ly/351z6iG)

A Florida man brought along an AR-15 rifle, a 9mm handgun, and a cache of ammo for his Disney World family vacation due to safety fears over recent anti-racism protests in the state and across the country. The 43-year-old Palm Beach Gardens man checked into Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort in Orlando with his guns stuffed in a tennis bag on Labor Day weekend. The man had a concealed weapons permit and was not arrested “because no laws were broken.” Security at Disney safely stored the man’s guns for him until the end of his trip. Police were notified of the incident after the bellman handling the bag discovered the weapons when he looked inside upon realizing how heavy it was. Disney spokeswoman Andrea Finger told the Orlando Sentinel in a statement: “Our policy is clear that guns or weapons of any kind are not allowed at our resort regardless of whether someone has a permit.” (https://bit.ly/3nPnR5F)

THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John,

My mom is upset with me. The other day I bumped into her at the grocery store. She asked me where my 9 year old daughter was. When I told her I left my daughter home watching a movie while I went to the store, she freaked out on me. I explained that she has a phone and can call if there's any issues, but my mom was still very upset. I don't understand why. My daughter is very responsible and I trust her. I wouldn't leave her home all weekend, but I think she's OK to be home for 15 minutes while I run to the store. My mom wouldn't even return my call later that evening. Now I'm not sure how to make her happy. Any ideas? Do you think 9 years old is too young to be home alone for a few minutes?
