Ontario researchers are working on plans to turn food waste, such as potato peels and corn stalks, into plastic and nylon that can be used to create everyday items — such as yoga pants. The wasteCANcreate program looks to use genomics to help divert tons of waste into useful household clothes and items. We’ll spare you the gross details, but the project involves a process called precision fermentation, which allows tiny creatures to snack on starchy foods and then “poop” out tiny particles of plastic waste, which could then be used to make larger plastic and nylon products such as water bottles or athletic wear.

A Colorado veterinary clinic is advising pet owners to remove their dog’s collar when inside. The Royal Vista Vets says that while a collar is essential for keeping your pup safe in the outside world, when you return home, it’s safer to remove it, because it could easily catch on furniture. The statement was released after a 14-month-old Golden Retriever got his collar stuck while playing. He panicked and tried to get free, but twisted himself in way that his collar tightened around his neck. Percy is now on the road to recovery.

Will Ferrell is reportedly in talks to star in a biopic about an NFL legend. It’s being reported that the “Anchorman” star is in discussions to portray late coach and TV commentator ‘John Madden’ in “Madden”, a feature from MGM/Amazon Studios to be directed by David O. Russell. Deadline says the project has been in the works for some time, with Russell in the midst of a script rewrite until the WGA strike placed the project on hold.

It’s hard to believe that Robert Downey Jr. could’ve played any other Marvel character but ‘Iron Man’ — but it almost happened. For the 15th anniversary of Iron Man’s release, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and Jon Favreau — who directed, produced and appeared as ‘Happy Hogan’ in the 2008 film — revealed that Downey Jr. almost didn’t play the iconic Marvel hero. In an interview published on YouTube, Favreau told Feige: “I remember you had all met with [Downey] already for like ‘Doctor Doom’ …on another project…I think he had come through on maybe Fantastic Four, so everybody sort of knew who he was.” Julian McMahon ultimately played Doom, and Downey Jr. spawned the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Iron Man.

A 40-year-old man from the Netherlands is able to walk for the first time in 12 years. Gert-Jan Oskam, who was paralyzed in a cycling accident, is learning to walk again thanks to a “brain-spine interface”. The wireless, electronic implants create a direct neurological link between Oskam’s brain and spine to decode and transmit his thoughts into commands to move his legs and feet. With the implants, Oskam has been able to regain natural control over the movement of his legs, allowing him to stand, walk and even climb stairs, a medical first. Oskam says he’s especially excited to be able to stand at a bar to drink with his friends.

A Colorado man, pulled over for speeding, tried to put his dog in the hot seat. The Springfield Police Department reported that when they stopped an unidentified male for driving 52mph in a 30mph zone, the man “attempted to switch places with his dog, who was in the passenger seat” as an officer approached the vehicle. The male then “exited the passenger side of the vehicle and claimed he was not driving.” He then tried to flee, but was quickly apprehended. Perhaps unsurprisingly, “The male party showed clear signs of intoxication”. Police said the man was booked on multiple offenses and “The dog does not face any charges and was let go with just a warning.”
