Pet owners spend more on dogs than cats at Christmastime. A poll of 2,000 pet owners found that kitties typically receive $24 worth of gifts, while pampered pooches can expect about $34 worth of puppy presents. Chew toys top the Christmas list for dogs this year, with many likely to get a new snuggly blanket and their own turkey dinner to enjoy on the big day. Cats are most likely to receive new toys and scratching posts under the tree. One in 3 pet owners said they will also be buying a pet stocking this year.

Oompa Loompa doopity doo — here’s a box office opening for you. “Wonka” is off to an OK start in North America after earning a projected first weekend domestic total of $39 million. That’s a so-so start for the film, which carries a hefty $125 million production budget. The prequel musical is also benefiting from golden ticket prices for premium large format auditoriums like Imax. After taking first-place in its opening last weekend, “The Boy and the Heron” has fallen to third place, after Wonka and “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes”.

A big update on the TV adaptation of the iconic cult classic “Cruel Intentions”: “Gossip Girl” star Savannah Lee Smith has been added to the cast. Released in 1999, the original Cruel Intentions film starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon, and followed a web of sexual and psychological warfare between affluent highschoolers. First confirmed in April, the TV version has now officially received a series order from Amazon. Khobe Clarke of “Firefly Lane” fame has also been cast as a regular.

James Cameron reflected on the making of “Titanic,” the most expensive film of its time, in an interview with the LA Times for the film’s 4K remastering home video release. The complex engineering and needed to create large sets and sequences contributed to the high cost of making the film. The director noted that “The scale of everything was beyond anything we could imagine…At the time we thought, wow, there’s no way this movie could ever make its money back…Well, guess what?” In addition, Cameron said to save money, he and his team only cast short extras in order to “make the set look bigger”. Quote: “Anybody above five foot eight, we didn’t cast them. It’s like we got an extra million dollars of value out of casting.”

SCOOP OF THE DAY: Brought to you by BetterCreditCards.com

A survey found that women spend over 13 hours looking for the perfect gift for their mate — while men spend only 4 hours.

62% of teens surveyed want a smartphone for Christmas.

If you find yourself with a hangover this holiday season, simply walk it off. Research shows that light exercise can help you through a “day after the night before”, but trying to “sweat it out” will have the opposite effect. A 2020 study found that “hungover participants experienced significantly more exhaustion when performing physical activity at the same level as non-hungover participants”. This also means that your body is working hard to get rid of toxins — and intense movement adds another chore to its to-do list, creating extra stress that your body probably won’t cope well with. On the other hand, “a walk in fresh air or some gentle stretching can feel good when you feel run down”, according to an expert. It’s also good for you mentally.
