Daily naps can protect your brain from shrinking as you age, a new study says. As we get older, our brains decrease in size and weight by about 5% per decade after turning 40 — and possibly faster after 70, contributing to the changes in cognitive function that come with aging. But researchers from London and Uruguay found that sneaking in a quick nap during the day may correlate with a larger total brain volume. Those who napped regularly were found to have a difference of 2.6 to 6.5 years of brain-aging, compared to those who power through the day without a power nap.

iPhone users will soon be treated to 118 new emojis, including a phoenix, a shaking head, and 4 gender-neutral families. They’ll be available as part of a beta version of the new IOS 17.4, expected this Spring. The emoji expansion pack, some of which are also available on Samsung and other devices, also feature “new emoji concepts” like a head shaking horizontally, a head shaking vertically, a lime, brown mushroom and broken chain. The new update also tweaks the existing family emojis so they’re (somewhat controversially) devoid of color, but there are what are called “Emoji gender options” and “skin tone modifier options” available. Also included are 6 new people emojis, with direction-specifying variations. So, you could use a person walking while facing a certain direction, or a wheelchair-bound person facing a particular direction. LINK: https://blog.emojipedia.org/first-look-new-emojis-in-ios-17-4/

The new “Road House” movie is coming, and Prime Video has released the official trailer and poster. The poster pays homage to the 1989 original, starring Patrick Swayze. It contains several easter eggs, including a photo of the monster truck that destroyed the car dealership, a glass with the Double Deuce logo, and a “Be Nice” sign. It also includes a “3 Simple Rules” sign that says “Expect the Unexpected,” “Take it Outside” and “Be Nice.” Jake Gyllenhaal, the star of the remake, is in the middle of the poster, wearing an unbuttoned shirt with cuts and bruises on his body. The 2024 version of Road House streams on Mar. 21. LINKS: http://tinyurl.com/s8bx4bcb http://tinyurl.com/5n8kteks

Researchers from Columbia University have debunked a decades-old assumption about people’s fingerprints. They used artificial intelligence to discover that fingerprints from different fingers of the same person ARE NOT unique and unmatchable, challenging a long-standing presumption in forensic science. The team utilized a public US government database containing around 60,000 fingerprints. They fed these fingerprints into a specially-trained AI system, which helped reach the conclusion that it is possible that some of your fingerprints just may match up with each other. Experts say this information could “tip the balance” in reviving some cold cases, and even lead to the acquittal of some innocent people.

A man tore a hole in his windpipe by pinching his nose and keeping his mouth shut during a sneezing fit, a case study says. Doctors in Scotland are using the “rare” situation as an example of what could happen if people hold in their sneezes. The man, in his 30s, suffered from allergic rhinitis, which causes nasal congestion. He experienced “severe neck pain” after stifling multiple sneezes in a row by pinching his nose and closing his mouth. The incident happened while he was driving with a seatbelt across his chest. Doctors believe the seatbelt also played a factor.

LIFE HACKS TO GET YOU THROUGH WINTER:

If your car ends up getting stuck in snow, cat litter provides enough friction to help your tires get moving again. Keep a box in your trunk to save yourself a lot of hassle.

Have lip balm on hand to ease cracked knuckles. The cold weather will make your skin dry and sore, and sometimes not even hand cream is up to the task.

Use a disposable razor to gently shave along the surface of your sweaters to get rid of balled-up bits.

Make your own throat-soothing remedy by mixing some powdered ginger with honey and a squeeze of lemon in a mug of hot water.

Don’t skip the hat because you’re worried about bad hair when you reach work. Take some dry shampoo with you to battle ‘hat hair’ when you arrive.

Make hot chocolate in your slow cooker. Because who doesn’t want a massive vat of hot chocolate on the go when it’s chilly outside? Slow-cooking gives it a deeper, toasty flavor.

Wash your face with an oil-based cleanser. Fend off the discomfort of dry skin using hydrating skincare products … or make your own using a mixture of olive oil and sugar.

Mix 2 parts vinegar with 1-part water, then spray onto your car’s windshield to prevent it icing over. You’ll save yourself scraping time the next day.

Invest in an electric blanket. Turn it on while you get ready for bed, then prepare for peak snuggling.

Knit yourself some mittens. Gloves might be easier for texting, but mittens are proven to keep your hands warmer. They’re also much easier to make.
