THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John,

Last Christmas, my boyfriend and I broke up. We had been together for quite a while and we work together. He bought me a ring and everything, but it wasn't working out so I ended the relationship. It was awkward to break up, but it was the right thing to do. I've kind of moved on, but now I just found out from a friend that works in his department that he's dating a younger girl... a much younger girl. He's 31... his new girlfriend is 19. She also works in the same department where he works. I don't know what to do with this information. I don't think it's right that he's literally dating a teenager. When we dated, it was OK because we were at the same company, but not even in the same department. Now he's dating someone who actually works for him. I'm not sure that the company would be OK with this. Do I just stay out of this? I'm afraid he might lose his job!

New research shows a connection between consumption of highly processed food, and “elevated” mental duress later in life, says the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study. Researchers looked at how the fatty foods later impacted adolescents aged 13-17 as a baseline, and then checked in with the subjects years later. They found that “Participants with the highest intake of ultra-processed food had increased odds of elevated psychological distress”. Those who ate the most ultra-processed food were fund to be most-likely to experience distress at the 15-year follow-up. This distress was described by the study as “a marker for depression.”

Paper straws might not be the “eco-friendly” revolution they’ve been promoted to be: Belgian researchers found that these so-called “green” utensils are toxic, and therefore potentially worse for the environment than their now-hated plastic counterparts, according to a new study published in the journal Food Additives & Contaminants. Researchers analyzed the concentrations of PFAs, or “forever chemicals” of 39 brands of drinking straws, comprised of 5 materials: paper, bamboo, glass, stainless steel, and plastic. They found that paper straws were the most PFA-filled, with a 90% of paper straws containing the chemicals. Bamboo straws — another highly-touted green alternative — came in second with 80%, followed by 75% of plastic straws, 40% of glass straws, and none in steel straws.

Things get sour when Stacy sees Lydia kissing her school crush, with middle-school drama ensuing. Critics are hailing the film as a fresh tale of friendship that has the potential to become iconic for younger audiences. Though the Rotten Tomatoes score may change as more reviews come in, at last check, it was at 100%.

Kevin Hart has revealed he’s forced to use a wheelchair these days, after trying to race former NFL running back Stevan Ridley. In an Instagram video, he says he: “Tore my lower abdomen, my abductors are torn — I don’t even know what that is, but I tore ’em. … I can’t walk!” The 44-year-old rolled himself in the wheelchair for the camera, explaining that he “tried to jump out there and do some young stuff” Hart said his injuries stemmed from a “debate” with the retired New England Patriots player over “who is faster.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/ep9ncfeb

It’s full sail ahead for the cargo ship Pyxis Ocean. The vessel, now on its maiden voyage from China to Brazil, is outfitted with WindWings sails, which are 123-feet tall and made of the same material as wind turbines. It is the first real-world test of the sails, which are designed to cut fuel consumption. Because the ship does not rely solely on an engine, the sails could reduce save 3.3 tons of fuel per day, and reduce its lifetime emissions by 30%. The shipping industry generates about 837 million ton of carbon dioxide per year, and wind power “can make a difference” as the world awaits new clean energy sources, says Dr. Simon Bullock, shipping researcher at the University of Manchester’s Tyndall Center.
