When you come across someone who answers a question quickly, do you subconsciously assume that person to be smart? It turns out that might not be the case. Researchers in Germany and Spain discovered in a study that contrary to popular belief, those with higher IQ scores were only faster when it came to simple tasks, but they actually took longer to solve difficult problems, compared to those with lower IQ scores. The researchers found that brains with “reduced synchrony” between brain areas tended to “jump to conclusions” when making decisions (Reduced synchrony means “dumber people”, we think!) Those of higher IQ were found to take longer to reach a conclusion because their brain is going through more thorough processing, and waiting for certain brain regions to complete the necessary steps to come up with what it feels is the correct answer.

It sounds too good to be true, but a new treatment may finally “zap” away chronic pain for good. Scientists at Johns Hopkins Medicine say their new non-invasive pain treatment called ‘scrambler therapy’ is capable of yielding significant relief for 80-90% of chronic pain patients. Scrambler therapy involves administering electrical stimulation through the skin using electrodes placed above and below the source of the chronic pain. The aim is to capture the nerve endings and replace signals from the area experiencing pain with signals coming from adjacent areas, which are experiencing no pain.

Sofia Coppola and Michael B. Jordan will be receiving honors at this year’s Academy of Motion Pictures Museum gala, alongside Meryl Streep and Oprah Winfrey. The Oct. 14 event has permission to proceed from SAG-AFTRA and WGA, even if the strikes continue. Jordan, the star of “Creed,” and “Black Panther”, will receive the Vantage Award, for those working to challenge and contextualize dominant narratives around film. Sofia Coppola will receive the Visionary Award, noting an artist/scholar whose innovations have advanced the art form of cinema.

Why did it have to be snakes? Harrison Ford’s iconic character ‘Indiana Jones’ might be petrified of snakes, but the star says he’s “humbled” to be the namesake for a new snake species. The 81-year-old was referring to a newly-discovered species that is now called “Tachymenoides harrisonfordi.” It was found in the Andes mountains in Peru. And although it was discovered in 2022, info about the snake’s name was not made public until this week.

Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger have listed their Pacific Palisades home – for $32 million. Robb Real Estate says on Instagram that the mansion is up for sale after being “Completely rebuilt in 2021…the hillside home is tucked away within a gated community and boasts views of mountains, the ocean and Catalina Island.” The nearly 13,000-square-foot structure offers 6 bedrooms, a golf simulator, a state-of-the-art gym, and a wellness center with a steam room and sauna. The couple bought the home for $15.6 million in 2018. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/bdedan9m

You break a traffic rule, it’s fair that you’d expect to receive a traffic ticket. But some Toronto drivers have been handed yellow or red cards by a fake soccer referee for bad driving behaviour lately. Since the start of FIFA Women’s World Cup, Martin Reis, a 59-year-old performance artist, has transformed himself into ‘Avery Goodcall’, a FIFA referee sporting a black and yellow uniform, along with a whistle, who – instead of giving violations to players for unsportsmanlike behaviour — hands out violations to drivers not following the rules of the road. Goodcall says he came up with the idea after noticing that in the city, many crosswalks are routinely blocked by vehicles, which then sit there idling while awaiting a green light. Quote: “I decided just to come out in the traffic and give out some red and yellow cards, which is like a really universal language, everybody knows soccer.” He usually donned his alter-ego costume during rush hour on days when a World Cup game was scheduled.
