How are you making out with those New Year’s resolutions? And what about Dry January? Oh, that’s a thing of the past already? You’re not alone. The average drinker only lasts until about . . .January 10 in their attempt at not drinking alcohol at all during Dry January, according to a survey. The survey asked 2,000 Americans over 21 to reflect on their experiences with Dry January and their overall drinking habits. Results show that 7 in 10 respondents (69%) have given the challenge a shot at one time or another – and over half said their attempt was an unsuccessful one. And if you at least made it through the first weekend of 2024 without raising a drink, good for you. The poll also found that 4% of respondents failed Dry January of New Year’s Day!

Just when we think we’re making headway in eliminating the environmental disaster-in-the-making that is plastic drinking straws – comes this: Scientists at the University of Antwerp in Belgium say that paper straws are not quite the eco-solution that many have hoped for. Plus, they argue that some plant-based and ‘eco-friendly’ alternatives to plastic may be silently contributing to PFAS (“forever chemicals”) pollution. They tested 39 different straw brands made from plastic, paper, glass, bamboo, or stainless steel, and found PFAS in almost all the materials. Stainless steel was the only consistent exception. Apparently, to make paper and bamboo straws water-repellent, many manufacturers appear to add PFAS. Either that, or they are using recycled materials that contain forever chemicals. The scientists concluded that cutting back on plastic can help — but only substantially if the alternatives are PFAS-free.

Nick Offerman said “the idea has been pitched” for him to return as ‘Frank’ with his small screen love ‘Frank’ to “The Last of Us”. After taking home his first Emmy Award on Saturday night, for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series, he was coy about returning to the role alongside fellow Guest Actor nominee Murray Bartlett. Offerman said it’s a “great question but I would have to ask somebody with a higher pay grade than myself.” He also joked: “I think we pitched a whole mini-series of a prequel of their lives before they met each other. It could be a musical.”

A man in Wales set up a camera in his tool shed to find out why objects were moving around — and discovered a “tidy mouse” was cleaning up the place. Rodney Holbrook said the mystery began with some bird food he stored in the shed ending up in an old pair of shoes. So, the wildlife photographer set up a camera and ended up recording footage of a mouse making nightly visits to round up small items that had been left out, and placing them into a small tray on the shelf. Usually the tidy mouse works alone, but will occasionally be accompanied by one or two others. The mouse and its cohorts have placed things like nails, cable ties and small tools into the tray in an apparent effort at hiding nuts. Holbrook says: “It happens every night without fail.”  LINK: http://tinyurl.com/ycy36d6j
