After boosting a Walmart “electric courtesy cart” from a store in St. Petersburg, a tipsy Florida Man drove the hot wheels nearly a mile before cops apprehended him as he tried to recharge the cart at a gas station. 59-year-old John Davis is jailed on a felony grand theft charge in connection with his alleged swiping of the $1500 vehicle late Saturday evening. Cops allege that Davis rode the cart “off of Walmart property and continued riding it approximately one-mile east” of the retailer. An arrest affidavit does not indicate where Davis--who lives in Palmetto, 20 miles from the Walmart store--was headed around 10:30 p.m. Additionally, the court filing does not say how he got to the store in the first place. After Walmart workers alerted cops to the cart theft, police located Davis at a nearby Wawa, where he was attempting to recharge the cart via a “gas station electrical outlet.” Davis reportedly told cops that he was riding a stolen vehicle. According to the arrest affidavit, “The defendant was intoxicated.” (https://bit.ly/2Zlw8Vq)

Dating the Earth Is an Inexact Science. How do we know how old the planet is? As this helpful video explains, we pretty much look for the oldest bit of planet we can find (a tiny piece of zircon rock that was found in Western Australia) and use radiocarbon dating. That piece of zircon is about 4.374 billion years old, so scientists bump that up a bit when coming to their final figure of 4.54.

A French couple is facing years of jail time after stealing almost 90 pounds of sand from Sardinia, the Italian island known for its picturesque beaches. The alleged thieves told police they were taking the sand home because they wanted to keep it as a “souvenir.” According to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, two French citizens poured white sand into fourteen plastic bottles from Chia, a beach in southern Sardinia, and put them in the trunk of their SUV. The couple wanted to take it home as a memory of their vacation, but instead were caught on a ferry en route to Toulon, France. The pair was charged with theft under aggravated circumstance for having stolen from a public beach. They face between one and six years of jail time. BBC reports that sand theft is a growing concern on the island. Tourists bottle the sand up to then auction on online sites. (https://cbsn.ws/2NlqaOe)

Plenty of people complain about a meal going straight to their waistline, but one Florida man allegedly took things a bit too literally. 61-year-old Michael Owens was arrested after police say he tried to steal two packs of steaks from a Publix store in St. Augustine by shoving the meat down his pants. Owens was reportedly caught on surveillance footage allegedly grabbing two packs of rib-eye steaks — worth $56.36 — putting them in his pants and walking out of the store. A loss prevention officer who saw the alleged steak swipe apprehended Owens as he exited the store. The 61-year-old told investigators he figured if he got caught, he would just be removed from the store, not arrested. The steaks were recovered but weren’t allowed back on store shelves.(https://bit.ly/2zchAZz)
