THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John,

My sister is choosing to have her kids stay home for school, which is fine, but she's going to be working and so is her husband. She's having our mother keep an eye on the kids who are not old enough to be on their own. I think that's a bad idea. My mother has complained to me about it, but will not say anything to my sister. She's always been pretty spoiled and gets her way on just about everything. My mom is a wonderful grandma and want to spend time with her grandkids, but she is going to be obligated to be a full-time caretaker/teacher for three kids. That's a bit too much for her. How do I get my sister to see this? I don't want to start a family fight, but I also don't want my mom to get sick from the extra stress.

Signed – OlderSister

A Florida man accused of stealing beef jerky from a convenience store is now behind bars and facing a felony narcotics charge. 48-year-old Matthew James McNickles was arrested and charged with possession of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia after he went back to a convenience store he stole beef jerky from just hours earlier. Deputies with the Collier County Sheriff’s Office arrived at a 7-Eleven just before 9:00 a.m. on Aug. 10th. They were told that a man and a woman stole beef jerky and a case of water from the store around 4:00 a.m. and had come back. The pair were spotted by deputies in a blue Lincoln passenger vehicle that matched the description. Deputies pulled the Lincoln over and they saw an aluminum foil that was shaped like a pipe between McNickles’ legs and multiple unopened beef jerky packets. A black pouch containing glass pipes and several small plastic bags were found during a search of the car. One of the bags contained heroin. (https://bit.ly/2CkGnjx)

The Oklahoma man arrested for shooting an unarmed woman who tore down a Nazi flag flying in front of his home claims that he “acted in self-defense” when striking the fleeing victim with a hail of bullets from his AR-15 rifle. In arguing for a reduction of his $500,000 bail, 45-year-old Alexander Feaster portrayed himself as a “patriotic citizen” and “loyal American” whose political beliefs had subjected him to threats, harassment, and the frequent theft of his flags, which “were associated in the public’s consciousness with the Third Reich and National Socialism.” Feaster, who was locked up following the June 28th incident, has been charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon in connection with his shooting of 26-year-old Kyndal McVey. McVey’s gunshot injuries required multiple surgeries and several weeks of hospitalization.(https://bit.ly/2PZXrhM)

A restaurant in China has apologized after weighing diners in an effort to prevent food waste. The restaurant in the city of Changsha asked customers to stand on scales and scan their data into an app that recommended food choices based on their weight. Signs were posted at the eatery that read, “be thrifty and diligent, promote empty plates” and “operation empty plate” — references to a national campaign to stop wasting food. President Xi Jinping urged people last week to not toss excess food since there has been a shortage of some products due to the Coronavirus pandemic and flooding last month. But the restaurant faced backlash on social media for its attempts to contribute to the national campaign, leading it to post video Saturday to say it was “deeply sorry.” “Our original intentions were to advocate stopping waste and ordering food in a healthy way. We never forced customers to weigh themselves,” the restaurant said. (https://bit.ly/3iJVv9B)
