After a man ran off with the tip jar at a Pennsylvania pizza shop, investigators didn’t have to do a lot of legwork to track him down. Authorities said that 22-year-old Nicholas M. Mark had just applied for a job at the establishment, leaving his name and contact information. A worker at Pizza D’Oro told authorities that Mark came to the shop August 26th to apply, but at one point snatched the tip jar off the counter and ran outside. The worker said he set off in pursuit, but backed off when the suspect produced a knife. The suspect ran into the woods near the parking lot with the jar, which authorities say contained $220. His backpack was found in the restaurant and it contained multiple items bearing his name as well as items associated with drugs. He was arraigned on charges of robbery, theft, possession of a weapon, and possession of drug paraphernalia. (https://cbsloc.al/3lU4581)

To help you understand why you’re a monster before your morning coffee, the scientific minds at AsapSCIENCE put together a video explaining coffee’s effects on your brain. There’s some stuff about receptors, and something called adenosine, but that’s not important. Wanna know why coffee hypes you up? It does the same thing to your brain as crack. Caffeine hypes you up by increasing the production of adrenaline, but it also spikes the dopamine in your brain, which is exactly what cocaine does when it hits your system. Obviously, caffeine does this all to a lesser extent, but coffee is a drug and so it has a few things in common with the more hardcore stuff. AsapSCIENCE further explains that there is a lethal dose of caffeine, though it’s kinda impossible to achieve. To overdose on lattes, you’d need to consume 150mg for every kilogram you weigh. We’re talking thousands of refills, and your stomach wouldn’t physically be able to hold it all. Plus, even if you somehow acquired an elastic stomach, you’d be experiencing fits of mania and hallucinations long before the critical point.

Everyone who was once a child knows the incredible, simple joy that comes from blowing bubbles and watching an ultra-thin layer of liquid bob through the air before bursting apart. While it seems like magic when you’re a little kid, it turns out the mystery behind how bubbles work is not much more clear for adults. A team of mathematicians from New York University decided to take on the super daunting task of solving that mystery. There’s a lot of mumbo-jumbo from the study about oil bubbles, soap bubbles, film density… blah, blah, blah. Bottom line: the ideal speed for creating your bubble is about 8 miles per hour. Move your bubble wand at that speed for the best bubbles.

A woman named Ashley Spencer wanted to celebrate her 34th birthday with a bang. Specifically, the Florida Woman is accused of soliciting an accomplice to help kill her husband’s lover, a murder which “could be her birthday gift” to herself. Police began investigating Spencer in late-August after a friend reported that she was making threats against the woman. In an August 29th Snapchat message, Spencer asked the source, “You know of any felons that don’t give a damn about life and willing to do a job?” In a subsequent phone call, Spencer spoke of buying a gun and wanting to “do harm to the baby” fathered by her husband with the female target. In a September 2nd meeting with the purported felon--who was actually an undercover federal agent--Spencer agreed to pay $2,000 for the man’s assistance in the murder. While Spencer said she planned to shoot the victim while the woman slept in her home, she told the undercover that he would help her break into the residence and then dispose of her firearm after the killing. Charged with solicitation to commit murder and solicitation to commit burglary, both felonies, Spencer is being held in county jail. (https://bit.ly/3jVuzEl)

A Massachusetts man accused of faking his own death to avoid being charged with defrauding the CARES Act has been indicted. 53-year-old David Adler Staveley and his alleged co-conspirator, 52-year-old David Andrew Butziger, were the first people nationwide to be charged with fraudulently seeking Paycheck Protection Program loans guaranteed by the Small Business Administration under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The pair is accused of trying to secure $543,959 in loans intended for small businesses struggling amid the pandemic by falsely claiming they had dozens of employees at four businesses, including three restaurants, although they actually employed no workers there. Staveley, who was arrested in May, then faked his own death by staging his suicide, complete with leaving notes for associates and in his car, which he left unlocked and parked near the Atlantic Ocean.
