THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John,

My former best friend slept with my fiancé a few years ago. I have not talked to either of them since then. I moved on and have an amazing boyfriend now. My ex and my former best friend are not together, it was a one time thing. She sent me a hand written letter asking me to forgive her. I feel torn on this. We were very close, but she slept with my boyfriend, a guy I was planning to marry. Part of me wants to forgive her and thank her for stopping that train wreck before it got worse, but part of me will not be able to forget that she betrayed me the way she did. My mother said I should forgive, but not forget, whatever that means. She said I can forgive her but we don't need to hang out. What do you think? Should I forgive her? She did show me what kind of guy I was going to marry. I'm so blessed to have the most amazing man in my life now. He said he would be fine with whatever I decide on this. He did say he does not want to spend time with her. I laughed at that a little too much. Any advice?

Signed – Former Besties

We tend to shout during video calls when the video gets fuzzy because it’s the digital version of turning down the radio to see better when driving. Researchers from Radboud University in the Netherlands found that people do talk louder when their Zoom video calls get blurry, and they’re also likely to make more exaggerated gestures to compensate for the poor video quality. The team explains that using gestures is a natural human response to make sure you’re being heard.

A ski resort in Idaho re-opened for one day last Saturday after receiving more snow from a single April storm than in all of February and March. Bogus Basin Mountain called the last hurrah of ski season “Supply Chain Saturday,” blaming the lack of snow during the winter on nature’s supply chain issues. A Facebook post announcing the brief reopening said: “You read that right…our order of snow got delayed, and the manufacturer was inflexible. You know what we said to that: ‘If mother nature won’t be flexible, we will!’” The ski resort had closed for the season on April 3 because of a lack of snow.

Simon Cowell says he was “lucky to survive” back surgery after undergoing a serious operation in 2020. The “Britain’s Got Talent” judge was rushed to hospital after breaking his back in an accident involving his e-bike, and underwent 6 hours of surgery which included having a metal rod implanted. In a new interview, Cowell admitted he didn’t talk much about his injury at the time, because it was “a lot worse than people thought”. Then, when he believed the bones had healed, he went to a funfair with his son Eric, and tried to kick a football, resulting in “agony”. A year later he again fell from a bike – which set him back, but now, Cowell says he’s “almost healed” and “can actually play football with Eric.”

Here we go again: Another record for “Bridgerton”. After 4 weeks on the charts, Season 2 has become Netflix’s most-watched English Language series ever, with more than 627.11 million hours watched. The 2nd season of the show, which stars Jonathan Bailey as ‘Anthony Bridgerton’ and Simone Ashley as ‘Kate Sharma’, has now bested Season 1. And it’s the first time a show has held the #1 and #2 most-watched slots.

Jennifer Lawrence’s little one has arrived! The 31-year-old “Don’t Look Up” star has welcomed her first baby with husband Cooke Maroney. The couple was recently spotted out on a stroll with their newborn. It was confirmed in September that Lawrence and Maroney were expecting their first child together. The 2 were first linked in June 2018, became engaged in February 2019 and tied the knot the following October.

Netflix not only announced last week that it plans to introduce commercials to the streaming service, it said that it will finally make good on its plans to crack down on password sharing. How? The company will likely introduce an extra fee for subscribers whose accounts are being used by multiple people outside of the home. The company has already started a test of this feature in Peru, Costa Rica and Chile. Netflix is charging an additional fee to add “sub accounts” for up to 2 people outside the home. The pricing is US $2.13-2.99 per month. Industry observers say the company starts with an alert sent to account holders whose password are being used in other households, advising them of their options, and that people who use a shared password can transfer profile to either a new account or a sub account, allowing them to keep their viewing history and recommendations. Netflix says more than 100 million households are using a shared password.

If you’re one of the many who, in light of soaring prices, are trying to stretch their grocery dollars these days, here’s something to keep in mind. According to a dietician, bananas are the #1 fruit to eat when you’re on a budget. Why? A number of reasons. Among them: They’re inexpensive (what other fruit can you snack on for a week, for a buck or 2?), they’re nutritious (carbs, fiber and potassium, and they improve gut health, help with blood sugar control and promote healthy weight management). Bananas are versatile (they’re not just a portable, delicious snack – they can be made extra-filling when paired with nut butter or yogurt, they also make a great topping for toast, an excellent addition to smoothies and can, of course, be mashed into baked goods). It’s a little-known fact, but you can also eat banana peels, either fresh or frozen.

CELEBS WHO SAID, “NAH, I’M GOOD”:

Everyone knows that classy Dolly Parton has asked to have her name withdrawn from consideration for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But did you know . . .

David Bowie: Turned down honors from the Queen not once, but twice. He said “nope” to a CBE in 2000, and in 2003, when offered a knighthood, he told the press: “I seriously don’t know what it’s for. It’s not what I spent my life working for.”

John Lennon: He, along with the other Beatles, accepted an MBE in 1965…and he gave it right back in 1969. In a letter to the Queen, he said he was returning it “in protest against Britain’s involvement in the Nigeria-Biafra thing, against our support of America in Vietnam, and against ‘Cold Turkey’ slipping down the charts.”

Sinéad O’Connor: When nominated for 4 Grammys in 1991, she pre-emptively refused to accept any she might receive, due to the “false and destructive materialistic values” of the music industry. She still won a Grammy.

Marlon Brando: When he won the Best Actor Oscar for his role in “The Godfather”, he famously sent a Native American woman named Sacheen Littlefeather to turn down the award in his place. She said from the stage that Brando would not accept the “very generous award” because of the “treatment of American Indians today by the film industry.”

Drake: In December 2021, withdrew both of his 2022 Grammy nominations. While he never explained why, following The Weeknd’s snub in 2020, Drake wrote: “I think we should stop allowing ourselves to be shocked every year by the disconnect between impactful music and these awards.”

Dolly Parton: Also turned down the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Twice. Once because her husband was ill, and once because she couldn’t travel due to COVID. Quote: “I’m not sure that I even deserve it. But it’s a nice compliment for people to think I might deserve it.”

Ground was broken on Earth Day (Fri.) for the world’s biggest wildlife crossing. Spanning over 10 lanes of the 101 freeway in the Los Angeles area, the historic Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing will be a global model for urban wildlife conservation. 2,700 mostly private donors raised $15 million for the construction of the 165-foot crossing in Liberty Canyon, where some of the wealthiest Hollywood celebs live. The crossing will preserve biodiversity by re-connecting an integral wildlife corridor for such diverse species as bobcats, foxes, deer, lizards, and most critically, help save a threatened local population of mountain lions from extinction.
