Public safety campaigns designed to reduce car crashes are actually having the opposite effect, according to new research. Highway signs that show the number of traffic fatalities end up causing more accidents, a joint study by the universities of Toronto and Minnesota has found. Researchers studied data from Texas, where highway sings display those messages one week per month. Displaying fatality messages was found to increase the number of crashes in the next 6 miles by 4.5%. Fatality messages were found to cause an additional 2,600 crashes and 16 deaths each year. The professors in charge of the study believe that traffic death signs are distracting to drivers who are already overburdened by multiple sources of information.

The world might be headed toward a shortage of – wait for it – SAND, according to a UN report. Sand is the world’s most-exploited resource after water, playing a vital role in both construction and the natural environment. The report argues that we need to “drastically change the way we produce, build and consume products, infrastructures and service.” or humanity and the natural world could face some very real difficulties. Sand is the key ingredient in concrete, asphalt, and glass, and the UN says around 50 billion tonnes of sand and gravel are used each year, enough to build a wall around the planet 27 meters (88 feet) wide and 27 meters (88 feet) high.

Clean energy may be about to get a whole lot cheaper, because British scientists have developed a new type of hydrogen fuel cell using iron instead of costly platinum. The breakthrough brings the widespread commercialization of hydrogen cell electric vehicles a step closer to reality. They are an environmentally-friendly alternative for portable power, with water vapor the only by-product. The development puts the common metal ahead in the race to find cost-effective catalysts. Currently, platinum accounts for about 60% of the cost of a fuel cell. A release from Imperial College London says: “Our cheaper catalyst design should (bring the cost down for) systems that use hydrogen as fuel, ultimately reducing greenhouse gas emissions and putting the world on a path to net-zero emissions.”
