THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John,

We moved from one side of town to the other side. We don't make it back to the old neighborhood very often, but last week we were there for a birthday party. I noticed one of the homes next door to our old home had been completely remodeled. I asked about it and found out the older gentleman who lived there had passed away. His wife sold the home and moved to an apartment. I feel absolutely awful that I didn't know this happened almost a year ago. I shared a property line, but I feel like I shared so much more than that. He was like a grandfather to my kids and like a father figure to me. I'm very sad that nobody told us this happened. I feel like I need to reach out to his wife. We didn't know her as well, but I think I would feel better letting her know that we didn't know he passed away. My wife said I should leave her alone because we didn't really know her and it's been too long. That doesn't sit well with me. What are your thoughts? Is it too late for me to reach out to her to pass along my condolences?

Signed – SadFormerNeighbor

The hours after sunset may be toughest for folks trying to stay slim, new research shows. The small study suggests that you're more likely to overeat in the evening -- especially if you're feeling stressed.

We need to change our hair every 14 months, our car every seven years - and our relationship every eight years

Adults like to stick with what they know and don’t look to move house until they’ve been in the same abode for a decade. The study also found people think the best time to implement a change is January. Although April, and the opportunity for a thorough spring clean, is also a popular time for a shift in pattern for 13 per cent.

LeVar Burton says he didn’t get the “Jeopardy!” hosting gig because “The fix was in”. Despite numerous fan campaigns to have the “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and “Reading Rainbow” star take over the full-time gig following Alex Trebek’s death, the show went in another direction. Although Burton has since said that he’s “really happy with the way things worked out,” he talked about the “humiliation” of not being offered the job in a recent interview. He called Jeopardy! his “favorite game show,” and said he thought he was “well-suited” for the hosting gig, but “as it turns out, it really wasn’t a competition, after all, the fix was in.” He continued: “In the fullness of time, everything will be revealed.”

Star Wars” fans were given a treat Wednesday when Disney+ dropped the newest episode of “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” starring Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen. The episode offered viewers their first look at ‘Darth Vader’ — played by Christensen, who reprised the role for the first time since 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” But the big moment was when it was revealed that the person voicing the Dark Lord was none other than James Earl Jones. The 90-year-old has voiced the iconic villain since “A New Hope” debuted in 1977. Fans of the franchise went wild at the re-emergence of Jones’ deep, distinguished voice, with one excited Twitter user writing: “VADER IS BACK! THE Darth Vader!!! Hayden Christensen & James Earl Jones!! Absolute goosebumps! This will be a day long remembered.”

Queen Elizabeth II made a surprise appearance in a comedy sketch with Paddington Bear during a star-studded Platinum Jubilee concert at Buckingham Palace. The rock group Queen opened the musical performances, followed by Diana Ross, Rod Stewart, Duran Duran and more. The Queen did not watch the Platinum Party at the Palace in person, however. The 96-year-old has been experiencing mobility problems, and also pulled out of Friday’s thanksgiving service. But in an echo of her appearance in a sketch with James Bond for the London Olympics in 2012, she had pre-recorded a 2½ minute comedy segment in which she offered tea to Paddington, and showed him a marmalade sandwich she keeps in her handbag. In his speech, Prince Charles joked that that his mother was “watching the celebrations with much emotion, having I hope finished her marmalade sandwich”. The Queen did make an unexpected appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace on Sunday, as part of the final day of celebrations to mark her historic 70-year reign. THRIFTY TRICKS TO MAKE STUFF LAST LONGER:

Sneakers: Apply non-gel toothpaste with an old toothbrush to make your old white-soled shoes look new again. Leave on for 10 minutes, and then wipe with a damp towel.

Clothing: Wash clothes inside out. The exterior of the fabric takes much less abuse and everything will look newer longer.

Glasses: If a screw keeps coming loose, remove it and apply a thin coat of nail polish.

Paint: When a can is stored upside down, the paint creates an absolutely airtight seal, which will make your paint last longer.

Paint rollers: Between coats of paint, store it in a plastic chip container, to keep it from drying out.

Windshield wipers: To avoid drying out and cracking in a short time, soak a clean rag with glass cleaner, and wipe up and down the length of your wiper blades. You’ll see the results on the rag, and you’ll see better next time it rains.

Markers: Remove the back nib, and deposit a few drops of isopropyl rubbing alcohol onto the felt material inside. Shake the marker a bit to ensure the alcohol is absorbed.

Batteries: Charge batteries for your boat, motorcycle or riding mower at least once a month in the off-season, or hook them to a battery maintainer. At the least, remove the battery and store it indoors if you live in an area with cold winters.

FUN FACT FOR YOU:

WEIRD NEWS: Brought to you by WeirdGiftOfTheDay.com

A doctor has warned people that we shouldn’t be peeing in the shower. Why? Well, just hold on a second. Urogynaecologist Dr Teresa Irwin, who specializes in pelvic health and incontinence, explained to her 85,000 TikTok followers that by letting loose while washing, we’re actually training our bladders to want to, uh, go when we hear the sound of water. In her video, she says: “You don’t want to do it all the time because what happens is every time you hear the sound of water your bladder is going to want to pee – because it’s used to hearing the sound of the water in the shower.” The end result, according to her, is that “whenever you’re washing your hands, washing the dishes, your bladder is going to be salivating, so to speak, because it wants to go and pee.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/s8nzaxnp
