THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John,

My youngest brother has a girlfriend for the very first time. He's never been much of a ladies man, but he found a beauty. They have been dating for about three months now. She was at a recent family get together and I recognized her as an ex-girlfriend of one of my class-mates from college. I tried to see if I could bring up something to get on that topic, but when I mentioned the school, it seemed that the conversation changed. I have not reached out to my former class-mate, but I seem to remember things ending poorly. He claimed that she was crazy. I kinda want to warn my brother, but I'm not even 100% sure it's the same girl. She's about the same age and has the same first name, but it is a common name for girls her age. Do I say something? Do I just butt out?

Thank you,

Older Brother

someone they can trust and confide in (94%)

someone who is comfortable communicating their wants and needs (92%)

someone who is emotionally mature (92%)

someone who can make them laugh (92%)

someone who is comfortable with their own sexuality (89%)

Earth can now be said to weigh about 6 ‘ronnagrams’, instead of 6,000 yottagrams. Jupiter can be described as having a mass of about 1.9 quettagrams, instead of 1.9 million yottagrams. And an electron’s weight is one rontogram, or 0.001 yoctograms. The ability to more succinctly describe the weight of our planet and the particles of our world came at this month’s General Conference on Weights and Measures in Paris. Scientists agreed to introduce the ronna, quetta, and ronto as prefixes for the International System of Units, better known as the metric system. Ronna, for example, now refers to the use of 27 zeros after a first digit. Earth weighs approximately 6 of those. They join the more familiar prefixes kilo, mega, milli, and micro.

The Palm Springs International Film Awards has announced that Cate Blanchett will receive the Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actress for “Tár,” in which she plays a driven orchestra conductor. Palm Springs Film Festival chairman Harold Matzner said: “Cate perfectly embodies Lydia Tár as an orchestra conductor at the height of her career whose life begins to unravel. There is no one better suited for this role.” She joins this year’s previously announced honorees Colin Farrell (actor) and Sarah Polley (director). The Palm Springs International Film Awards will take place on Jan 5.

Harrison Ford goes back in time in the eagerly anticipated “Indiana Jones 5” opening sequence, and even he says seeing his younger self is “a little spooky”. Fans are taken back to 1944 in the first scenes, featuring a castle swarming with Nazis. Director James Mangold, who is taking over from Steven Spielberg, said in Empire magazine that visual effects were used to de-age Ford and “give the audience an adrenaline blast,” before the movie jumps ahead to 1969. Ford, who is 80, said of coming face-to-face with a younger ‘Indy’: “This is the first time I’ve seen it where I believe it…I don’t think I even want to know how it works, but it works.” “Indiana Jones 5” is scheduled to hit theaters June 30, 2023.

Are you hosting family or friends from out of town this festive season? Then plan to miss out on some holiday slumber. A survey of 2,000 Americans found that those hosting others during the holidays lose 2½ hours of sleep per day when preparing to have company in their homes. Once they arrive, guests don’t necessarily get the best sleep, either. 75% say they feel compelled to go to bed and wake up at the same time as their host.

COVID-19 is almost 3 years old, and pandemic-related words are still the most-commonly-used words in the English language. According to Global Language Monitor (which keeps track of things like this…), “denier” and “COVID” are the 2 most used words of 2022. The group tracks usage across the internet as well as in print, online, and social media. The Texas-based analysts pulled together a list of 37 of the most used words and phrases in the English-speaking world. Others making the cut include: “vaccine,” “variant,” “pandemic,” “booster dose,” “lockdown,” and “Omicron”. “Ukraine” was the top non-pandemic word or phrase this year, while “climate change” and “global warming” continue to be 2 of the top phrases this century. In the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling to strike down Roe v. Wade, “right to life” finished as the third-most used phrase this year.

If you’ve got picky eaters at your table for the holidays, steer clear of the color red. As festive as it is, red dishware makes fussy eaters even less likely to eat a meal, researchers from the University of Portsmouth found. Their analysis found that study participants’ desire to eat potato chips was impacted by the color of bowl they were presented in. This was especially so among the pickiest of eaters, who claimed the chips were saltier in blue and red bowls. Red bowls ranked last when it came to desirability.
