I saw a stat just recently that said 2/3 of people feel self-conscious when we work out in front of others. Well, apparently, that’s not the only time that we, as adults, feel awkward. In fact, according to a new survey, 68% of us sometimes feel just as awkward as we did in our teens. The poll of 2,000 adults in the US ages 25-54, found that as teenagers, people were most self-conscious about their body shape (65%), hairstyle (61%) and smile (61%). And it turns out many of us still feel the same way. Over half say they are STILL uncomfortable about their body shape, closely followed by – you guessed it – their hairstyle and smile. Other interesting findings:

More men than women are self-conscious about their glasses or contact lenses (51% vs. 39%), height (54% vs. 42%), hairstyle (57% vs. 48%) and smile (55% vs. 49%).

Fewer women than men usually stand in the front row for a group photo (24% vs. 34%).

Taking selfies makes 41% of us feel anxious.

They say a dog is ‘man’s best friend’, but a new study has found they may actually be more attuned to the higher-pitched voices of women. An analysis of brain scans by researchers from the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience and Psychology and Eötvös Loránd University in Hungry suggest dogs really do listen when we talk to them. What’s more, they do so in a way that is oddly similar to human babies, with a preference for certain tones. The scientists believe this may be due to the fact that women more often speak to dogs with exaggerated elements of speech, such as tone, stress, rhythm and emotion, much they way they tend to speak to infants.

Can Taylor Swift’s new concert movie continue the momentum of “Barbenheimer” — and “Barbie” in particular — and become a cultural rallying cry at the fall box office? Cinema owners are counting on just that after last week’s surprise announcement that “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” will hit theaters across North America for several weekends, beginning Oct. 13. Sources say the film could open to a record $100 million, based on brisk advance ticket sales. They also say the movie could ultimately gross $150 million or more domestically. 2011’s “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” is currently the top-grossing concert film at the domestic box office with $73 million.

Ren and Stimpy are still coming back. The dark-humored animated sitcom “The Ren & Stimpy Show” aired on Nickelodeon from 1991-95. In 2020, Comedy Central announced a revival, to be produced without creator John Kricfalusi. Although there haven’t been many updates since then, Billy West, who took over the voice of Ren beginning in Season 3 and also voices Stimpy, responded to a fan who asked if Ren & Stimpy were still coming back. He said: “Yes they are! Sit tight and wait for announcements.”

I’m not sure you want to know this – but some people definitely do. Chinese researchers say they have a solution to these gross bathroom surprises – toilet skid marks. That’s right – a team at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology developed a non-stick toilet bowl surface that could make toilet brushes obsolete. They used 3D printing technology to make what they call an abrasion-resistant super-slippery flush toilet (ARSFT). Demonstrations show “dyed synthetic feces” sliding seamlessly down the bowl, without leaving anything for the next user to find.

SNOBBY MYTHS ABOUT WINE:

Professional Wine Tasters Know What They’re Doing – A study shows that only 10% of ‘experts’ are consistent in their choices. Many are swayed by labels and pricing.

Boxed Wine Is Tacky – Boxed wine is portable, durable, and cheap. But any costs that are saved come from shipping and packaging, not from cuts made to the quality of the wine.

Always Serve Reds with Meat; Whites with Fish – A fatty, meaty fish like tuna, salmon, or swordfish pairs much better with a medium-bodied red. A robust white can complement beef.

All Wine Gets Better with Age – 90% of all wine produced in the world is meant to be consumed within a year or two from when it’s made.

Never Put Ice Cubes in Your Wine – Ice can be used to temper wine that’s especially alcoholic. Chilling your wine also helps to bring out its subtle flavors and nuances.

Bottles with Corks Are Better than Those with Twist-Off Caps – The reality is that screw-caps have been proven to perform better than corks in protecting wine from harmful oxidation.

More Expensive Wines Taste Better – It’s an illusion. A study shows that people enjoy what they’re told are expensive wines more than cheap wines, even when there’s no price difference.

Blended Wines Are Inferior – A skilled blender is capable of combining two inexpensive varieties of grapes to develop big flavors. Some of them can fool even top-class experts.
