The old trope is that wedding cake is the most fattening food out there, but according to a new study, men are more likely than women to gain weight after marriage. Research published in the journal Economics & Human biology indicates that marriage has a positive effect on body mass index on males – significantly within the first 5 years of getting married. There was no clear correlation for females. Researchers at the Chinese Academy of Social Science found that marriage is associated with a 5.2% increase in the prevalence of becoming overweight for men, and a 2.5% rise in obesity. The scientists noted that these results came as a result of men eating more and exercising less as the marriage continued.

It would seem that TikTok is beginning to suffer from ‘Facebook-itis’. As in: For the “olds”. Or, at least, the app is not as Gen Z-focused as it once was. Journalist Ryan Broderick reports that nearly 40% of TikTok users are in their 30s and 40s — in other words, millennials and Gen Xers. For comparison, that age group accounted for just 20% of Instagram’s user base a decade ago. Another interesting thing that might spook the teens in your life into deciding that TikTok is no longer cool: Users 35–49 years old are more likely to upload videos than the 18-34 crowd.

Samsung took the wraps off of its “smart ring” this week, debuting the Galaxy Ring, after teasing it earlier this year. The device has multiple sensors that can track health markers, such as the wearer’s heart rate and sleep monitoring — while also giving users a score of their readiness for the day. The company is considering adding a feature that would allow the Galaxy Ring to do contactless payments, as with smartphones.

A man is facing up to 5 years in prison for stealing a horse — and trying to hide it in his 3rd floor apartment. When police in Wejherowo, Poland, received a call about a man trying to lead a horse to the upper floors of a residential building, they thought it was a prank. But when they sent out a crew to investigate, they were shocked to find a full-grown horse being led upstairs by a young man who appeared to be arguing with disgruntled neighbors. Police later learned that the unnamed resident had stolen the animal and was trying to conceal it, never apparently considering how conspicuous that operation would be, or how he would keep a full-grown mare in his 2-bedroom apartment — if he had managed to get it through the front door.

THINGS THE WORLD IS RUNNING OUT OF: (PART TWO)

Coffee: Between deforestation in coffee-producing countries like Vietnam and Indonesia, and global warming, a coffee shortage is expected to hit Europe in the next few years. If things get worse, you can expect prices to go WAAY up.

Rubber: Really? Rubber? In recent years, flooding and the spread of plant-based diseases are stopping rubber production from keeping up with demand. Experts are scrambling to find a solution before it send ripple effects through the global economy.

Copper: A huge gap in supply is on the horizon, and guess what? In order to transition to green energy, the infrastructure will need to be built using copper – in things like solar panels and wind farms.

Avocados and Bananas: Avocados require fertilizer, and during the Ukraine conflict, trade with Russia has been blocked, and they used to supply 1/3 of the fertilizer needed. As for bananas, a new infection is causing much concern. Scientists are working on it.

Bees, of course: They’re an essential part of our ecosystem, pollinating 80% of flowering plants in the world, almost all of which we depend on, in one way or another. That’s why we must preserve them.
