THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John

Over the weekend, I went out with some friends, my husband, and some of his friends. We were at a bar with a live band and everyone was having a great time. The other couples were dancing. Now my husband hates dancing. And I know it. But I wanted to dance and he wouldn't dance with me. So one of his friends asked me to dance, and I said yes. Why not? We've known this guy for a few months now, and he's nice. Well, my husband got upset and threatened to leave. I told him to man up and dance with me if he's upset about it. He said, okay, and proceeded to dance with me in the most embarrassing way possible. He was making a fool out of himself, strutting around the dance floor like a chicken. The song ended and he shouted, "There. I danced with you. Are you happy now?" That's when I agreed to leave and took him home. We haven't spoken since. I say he has to make the next move. Right?

Do you remember your first car? Of course you do. According to a new survey, 9 in 10 of us not only remember that first set of wheels, 60% wish they could go back in time to take better care of it. The poll, taken in the US, also shows that the older you are, the more nostalgic you are for your first drive. 91% of Baby Boomers and 89% of Gen Xers especially miss their first cars. The Talker survey also found that those who consider themselves to be “car lovers” are more likely to name their rides (49%), compared to “car likers” (20%), and “car dislikers” (14%). Those who named their car said the vehicle earned its name through its personality (37%), the make and model (29%) or how it performs (21%).

Ellen DeGeneres is clapping back at all those “mean girl” allegations, which created controversy on her talk show, and ultimately contributed to her walking away from it. She addressed the label attached to her during a recent stand-up show in Santa Rosa CA, telling the near-capacity crowd, “I am many things, but I am not mean.” SGGate reports that the comedian stood up for herself, but did acknowledge, “I can be demanding, impatient, and tough. I am a strong woman.” Ellen left her talk show in 2022, following allegations from former staffers of a toxic workplace.

Miranda Cosgrove gave “iCarly” fans renewed hope with the possibility of a movie adaptation, after Season 3 of the 2021 revival of the Nickelodeon comedy series ended with a cliffhanger. So, I’m excited, and I’d love to get to wrap up the story.” She added that the movie will happen “hopefully soon.” Cosgrove reprised her ‘Carly’ role in the Paramount+ revival, where she was also an executive producer.

Procrastination can be thought of as a negative trait — but what about “procrastination”? Precrastination is considered the opposite of procrastination. This is when you complete tasks as soon as possible — often before they need to be done — simply so you don’t have to think about it anymore. While this may seem like something to strive for, some psychologists believe that prescrastination also has downsides, such as using extra energy on a task, or rushing just to feel the relief of having it done.

A Japanese company has developed an ‘artificial intelligence filter’ that can detect angry screams and translate them into calm speech, as a way of reducing the stress experienced by call center operators. The app consists of 2 stages: one in which the AI identifies an angry voice and extracts key points of speech, and a second where it uses acoustic tools to transform it into a more natural, even polite tone. To train the AI, SoftBank’s engineers had actors record common phrases, including screams, accusations, threats, and demands for an apology. More than 10,000 pieces of voice data were used to train the AI filter. Interestingly, it doesn’t change any of the words spoken by the person, but significantly softens the intonation.
