Researchers from the City University of London say they know the perfect excuse for when you don’t want to do what you promised – just say you’re broke! They found that people who blame circumstances outside of their control — like not having enough money — retained more respect from others in comparison to someone who blamed factors like not having enough time.

Did you receive a year-end bonus? Is yours performance-related? This company’s is – literally. As in athletic performance-related. To promote a healthy lifestyle among its 100 employees, China’s Guangdong Dongpo Paper company is now rewarding them based on how much they exercise. Workers are eligible for a full monthly bonus if they run 50km a month. They will get 60% of the bonus for running 40km, and 30% for 30km. Running enthusiasts stand to get an additional 30% bonus if they can prove they ran over 100km in a single month. The distance run by employees is tracked by an app on their phones, which also takes into account activities like mountain hiking and speed walking.

A sleep expert claims he has 3 easy fixes for you if you constantly feel tired and don’t get enough sleep. Dr. Nerina Ramlakhan says that humming is one trick to combat tiredness, thanks to a chemical reaction that happens inside the body. How? According to the good doctor, when humming with the mouth closed, the body produces “nitric oxide in the nasal cavities, which is an antiseptic, antiviral and anti-inflammatory.” After humming, immediately inhale through the nose, to capture the nitric oxide, which should make you feel more awake. The UCLA professor of molecular and medical pharmacology also suggests taking regular breaks for a few minutes – and keeping them screen-free – every 90 minutes as a way to help stay fresh. His third tip? Think positively, because “fatigue is a common side-effect of anxiety”.

Social media posts may not be creating the impression that posters are hoping for, says a new study. Researchers in New York discovered that social media updates, such as Facebook statuses, often lack context and are seen in isolation, leading to misconceptions about the person doing the posting. The study found that those viewing the post generally perceive social media users as more open, having lower self-esteem, and being less reliant on others than the users perceive themselves to be. Interestingly, viewers of posts had a more accurate perception of a poster’s traits when updates were done in a multimedia format, including text, images, and hyperlinks.

IS CASH STILL KING?

Do you still use cash for many transactions? In a world dominated by debit and credit cards and mobile payment apps, a writer for the financial advice website “My Life, I Guess” came up with the following reasons that cash remains a popular choice for many . . .

To Support Small Business: Some small businesses simply can’t afford the costs of accepting non-cash payments. In doing so, they avoid high transaction fees, there’s less risk of fraud, and it simplifies their accounting.

Better Money Management: It’s hard to follow a budget when a transaction is completed with just a swipe. Instead, many prefer to use cash to manage their money more effectively. Cash is tangible, and when it’s gone, it’s gone.

In Case of Emergency: If the power goes out or a server goes down, cash could be your savior. Or, you could have simply forgotten your wallet at home – and are relieved to remember that $20 hidden away in your purse.

Less Paper Trail: Maybe the government and major corporations don’t need to know every purchase you make. Cash transactions offer a degree of anonymity that electronic transactions do not.

Less Pressure to Tip: Many feel that prompted tips amounts on electronic payment terminals are too high. And having the server present while entering your tip adds another degree of pressure. Simply leaving a bill on the table or handing it to the worker on your way out feels more appropriate.

Being Paid In Cash: If you’re paid in cash or tips, it makes sense to keep that money in your wallet to spend instead of putting it into the bank. This way, you can immediately access your money without worrying about transaction fees or processing delays.
