If you drink just 2 cans of soda pop per week, your workouts aren’t making up for it, a study says. Pharmacologists at the Université Laval in Quebec City analyzed health data from 100,000 adults over 30 years to find that the damage done by sugar-sweetened beverages can’t be overcome with the average recommended workout quota of 150 minutes weekly. The group said in their conclusion, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition: “Physical activity reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease associated with sugar-sweetened beverages by half, but it does not fully eliminate it.” They’re urging consumers to drop cane and syrup-based sodas altogether.

Long Covid may cause those who have it to experience a drop in their IQ by 6 points, a major study suggests. Researchers in the UK found this in patients who had been suffering from Covid symptoms for more than 12 weeks, compared to those who never had the virus. They also calculated a loss of 3 IQ points among those who had Covid symptoms for up to 12 weeks, and of 9 IQ points for those who were admitted to the ICU during their infection.

Netflix is expanding its live sports push with its first foray into boxing — in a big way. The streamer has announced a live event featuring Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson on July 20. The boxing exhibition will take place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. In a statement, Paul said: “It’s crazy to think that in my second pro fight, I went viral for knocking out Nate Robinson on Mike Tyson’s undercard. Now, less than 4 years later, I’m stepping up to face Tyson myself.” In his own statement, former heavyweight champ Tyson praised Paul — then declared his intention to “finish him”. By the time the July 20 match occurs, Tyson will be 58. Paul is 27.

Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik are stepping back into “The Big Bang Theory” universe. Exactly 4 years after the show aired its series finale, Parsons and Bialik are set to reprise their roles as ‘Sheldon Cooper’ and ‘Amy Farrah Fowler’ in the “Young Sheldon” series finale, set to air on CBS and Paramount+ on May 16. Details of the hour-long series finale are being kept under wraps.

CBS, the network behind “The Young and the Restless” and “The Bold and the Beautiful” has announced it is partnering with the NAACP to develop a new daytime drama about a wealthy Black family living in a posh, gated community. Titled “The Gates”, the potential series will be shepherded by veteran soap scribe Michele Val Jean, whose credits include “General Hospital”, “B&B” and “Santa Barbara”. If The Gates comes to fruition, it would be broadcast television’s first new daytime soap opera since the launch of NBC’s “Passions” 25 years ago.

Could shoving potato chips and French fries into our mouths finally some day be good for us? Maybe. In a significant leap forward for snack lovers, researchers at Michigan State University, have made a discovery that could lead to the creation of potato products that are tasty and healthy. At the heart of this discovery is a process known as cold-induced sweetening, which occurs when potatoes stored at low temperatures convert their starches into sugars. This not only makes potatoes taste sweeter, it also leads to the formation of acrylamide during cooking at high temperatures. This compound has potential cancer risks. The team at Michigan State has laid the groundwork for developing potatoes that naturally resist this sweetening process. That means future potatoes could avoid the formation of unhealthy compounds without the need for additional, costly interventions that can alter the flavor of the product.

A woman documented on TikTok her effort to become the first person to complete a marathon inside a Costco store. Using the handle @ugh_madison, she started her vid by pointing out a gym membership is $40 a month — and her Costco membership was $60 for the entire year, so if her plan worked, she would be saving $400 a year by canceling her gym membership and working out at Costco instead, where she could also take advantage of the store’s free samples and “save thousands of dollars a year”. The problem? The sheer number of customers in the wholesale retailer meant she sometimes was forced into “running circles in the aisle”. After walking around Costco for 9 hours, the store closed, but as she said: “you can’t close my dreams.” After 11 hours, 11 minutes, and 59,000 steps, @ugh_madison finished her marathon by walking around the Costco parking lot. At the end, she declares: “I can proudly say I am the first person to do a marathon at Costco.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2bpmz9yy
